What difference does UPTE make?

Here are some highlights:

  • UPTE-CWA research professionals negotiated a new pay system that allows for set increases each year (steps) to allow employees to move through their pay range regardless of whether they are evaluated.

  • UPTE-CWA lobbied and won an extra $19.8 million special wage augmentation from the state in 2000 for non-faculty salaries.  This meant an additional 1% - 2% more is salary increases;

  • UPTE-CWA fought to keep the Step/COLA pay system for techs (which pays higher, less arbitrary raises than the open merit system).

  • UPTE-CWA put money back  (1.3%) into employee paychecks that had been diverted from base wages to the Incentive Award Program several years ago.

  • UPTE-CWA was able to negotiate the first across- the- board raises that merit-based research and health care professionals have seen in last 12 years;

  • UPTE-CWA has negotiated fixed increase for each level of performance to bring consistency and fairness to the merit pay program;

  • UPTE-CWA negotiated dozens of equity increases that range from 1% to 20% for various job titles.

  • UPTE-CWA has won requirements that UC fully account for the distribution of wage increases.
  • UPTE-CWA was instrumental in bringing an end to the casual employment system. Hundreds of employees across the state have been converted to career employees and thousands more have received retirement credit for years worked as casuals.

  • UPTE-CWA negotiated the first severance pay program based on the employee's choice. Employees can get up to 16 weeks severance pay or choose a partial severance pay out with full rehire rights.

  • UPTE-CWA represented employees now receive 40 hours paid leave annually for training and development.

  • UPTE-CWA represented employees now benefit from a 60 days notice of layoff instead of 30.

  • UPTE-CWA negotiated mandatory reclassification review after 2 years employment for Staff Research Associate Is;

  • UPTE-CWA won a review for SRA II employees to determine overtime pay rights.

  • UPTE-CWA negotiated more premium paid holidays for healthcare professionals.

  • UPTE-CWA won a court battle that forced UC to pay time-and-a-half to 8,000 UC professionals.
