As a union representing professionals in world-class healthcare, research, and educational settings, we are committed to pursuing bold, transformative policies that will best serve all Californians. That includes expanding access and affordability to our medical and behavioral health services, improving labor standards for all workers, removing barriers to entry for higher education, and advocating for the good, union jobs needed to keep our communities strong, prospering, and equitable.

UPTE’s political committee, composed of members like you, has been hard researching, analyzing, debating, and interviewing prospective candidates for our union's endorsement. It is a responsibility we do not take lightly.

We strongly encourage all members to participate in phone banking, canvassing, and other outreach initiatives. Your involvement is vital in helping us elect candidates who will fight alongside us and create change that benefits all Californians.

Pilar Schiavo, candidate for California’s 40th State Assembly district

Elected in 2022, Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo represents California's 40th district, covering the Northwest San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys. She serves as Assistant Majority Whip and chairs the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. Schiavo has secured $20 million for infrastructure projects addressing water protection, homelessness, and education. With over 20 years in the labor movement, including 13 with the California Nurses Association, she’s a strong advocate for workers' rights and healthcare. Raised in a working-class family, Schiavo co-founded a group that’s provided 50,000 meals to those in need and secured housing for veterans and seniors. Find out more here.


Dr. Flojaune “Flo” Cofer, candidate for Mayor of the City of Sacramento

Dr. Flojaune “Flo” Cofer, an epidemiologist and community advocate, is running for mayor of Sacramento, focusing on creating a city where all families can thrive. Rejecting corporate donations, Cofer prioritizes grassroots leadership and a platform addressing homelessness, public safety, job creation, and climate initiatives. She chaired Sacramento’s Measure U Committee, advocating for taxpayer funds to support homelessness and youth programs. Her policy work has led to reduced infant mortality and expanded women’s health services. Inspired by her parents, both educators, and personal tragedy, Cofer aims to bring new leadership, affordable housing, and sustainable growth to Sacramento. Find out more here.


Aaron Peskin, candidate for Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco

Supervisor Aaron Peskin, a progressive leader and longtime public servant, has served three terms as president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Known for his legislative work, Peskin has championed affordable housing, renter protections, and transit safety. He supported over 100,000 new homes, passed San Francisco’s first inclusionary housing law, and led Prop A, a bond for affordable housing. Peskin also advocated for public safety, initiating programs and a task force to address the fentanyl crisis. Representing District 3, including Chinatown and North Beach, Peskin has preserved the city's historic charm while promoting sustainability and environmental protection. Find out more here.
