In the lead-up to a vote by the Board of Regents on December 13, the UC Union Coalition will be picketing on nine campuses Tuesday to defend our pension and health benefits. Plan to join one of the following actions at your UC campus.

Recent reports by Stanford researchers argue in favor of decreased pension benefits and increased employee contributions, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The reports were issued by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.

Students worldwide continue to protest tuition increases and budget reductions for academic programs. In the UK, Parliament will decide December 9 whether to "lift the cap" on tuition fees. As students complain about "paying up to £3000 a year (soon to be more) in tuition fees" and fear "graduating with debts in excess of £15-20 thousand pounds," American high school students "are looking to the U.K. to meet their educational needs."

The impending change in governor has inspired state Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) to introduce his higher education transparency bill for the third time. Yee has been concerned with the operations of so-called “auxiliary” organizations at both UC and the California State University systems. While the universities are subject to open records acts, which allow public scrutiny of expenditures and practices, auxiliary organizations are not. Schwarzenegger has vetoed this transparency bill twice before.

Academic student employees -- 12,000 teaching assistants, readers and tutors represented by UAW 2865 -- approved a new contract with UC last week. The three-year contract provides "a 2 percent minimum salary increase per year" and increased child care reimbursements.

"The glass ceiling shows few signs of cracking" inside California's 400 largest public corporations, according to an annual study by the UC Davis Graduate School of Management. Women hold just one of every 10 top executive positions.
