Significant backpay award takes effect for UC Systems Administrators

In March, UC Systems Administrators classifications secured significant raises and back pay of up to 21.5% from a settlement negotiated by UPTE at the end of 2022. This win was made possible by the strength we have when we stand together as union members.

“Securing the retro pay that Systems Administrators are owed was a hard-fought victory that took years of consistent follow-up and follow-through from our union. If management had done the right thing from day one, they could have saved us all a lot of time and trouble, but our persistence ultimately won out. The Sys Admin bargaining team is very happy that we’ve been able to come to this agreement,” said Tom Godfrey, a Systems Administrator with UCI Irvine Health.

Some campuses have already begun distributing backpay in advance of regular paychecks. If you do not receive a payment, or the payment is lower than what you expected please contact your bargaining team member or UPTE staff person.

“This victory will allow us to continue ensuring that UC’s IT systems are functioning and meeting the needs of our students, faculty, clinicians, patients, and beyond. It’s important to recognize our victories but we also realize that our unions’ work is not done,” Tom continued. “In the meantime, we ask members to please verify that the amount you received looks correct, and reach out to our union if you notice any discrepancies. If you aren’t already a member, I encourage you to sign a membership card so we can be even stronger for the fights ahead.”

There is still an important remaining issue on the table from our Feb 24th bargaining session – establishing pay scales going forward. Our SysAdmin bargaining team made a counter proposal that included new, comprehensive, pay scales and steps for SysAdmins that we compiled with feedback from our recent outreach meetings.

On Thursday, March 16th, the UPTE Sys Admin bargaining team members will be back at the table. We have been promised that the UC will not only have reviewed our proposal on pay scales but will respond to us with an answer.
