What is UPTE?

Founded in 1990 and affiliated with the Communications Workers of America three years later, University Professional and Technical Employees CWA Local 9119 (UPTE CWA 9119) now represents 20,000 University of California and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory employees. Central to our union are Healthcare Professionals (HX)—audiologists, case managers, clinical social workers, dietitians, occupational and physical therapists, and more—who joined in 1997 as UC Medical Centers expanded.

HX members deliver life-saving care to millions of patients—both to the general public and UC students—every year. At the same time, Research Support (RX) and Technical Employees (TX) colleagues advance discoveries and keep critical systems running. Together we fight for safe staffing, fair wages, and the resources clinicians need to provide top-quality treatment.

UPTE also bargains for part-time faculty at three California community colleges, skilled trades, and scientific staff at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory, strengthening healthcare, education, and research across the region.
