2025 UPTE Convention & CWA Convention Delegate Elections

This year, University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) will have a joint election process to elect two separate delegations, with one to attend the UPTE Convention and the other to attend the Communications Workers of America (CWA) National Convention.

All statewide members in good standing will be eligible to vote in the CWA Delegate Election. For chapters that will not have a contested UPTE delegate election, UPTE members will be asked only to vote for the CWA Convention delegates. This election will be held electronically and managed by ElectionBuddy.

The voting period will open on Monday, June 2, and close on Monday, June 9, 2025.

If you cannot vote online or access email, you may email your request for a mail-in ballot to elections@upte.org by Friday, May 30, 2025.

ElectionBuddy will share voting instructions and ballots via email on the morning of June 2.

Below, you will find a listing of all delegate candidates for the 2024 CWA and UPTE conventions:

  • My job title is graphic designer IV (797.4) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for the past decade. I am currently an UPTE-CWA 9119 bargaining committee member representing UC and Berkeley Lab’s workers, Chapter 184 (LBNL) Chair (previously Local 184 President) since 2021, Unit Rep organizer, and steward plus strike lead, picket-line marshall, law enforcement liaison, and chanter. I was also a representative on the UPTE-CWA 9119 Systemwide Executive Board from 2021 to 2023. I have represented Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s workers as a delegate for the past three UPTE conventions. If democratically elected, I look forward to doing it again on behalf of UPTE-CWA 9119 rank and file but at the CWA Convention. Solidarity forever.

  • I am a Clinical Lab Scientist from UCSF with 11 years of experience as an employee and UPTE Member at the University of California. After taking part in several statewide union conventions, I am eager to experience UPTE's place within the CWA, and meet with union siblings beyond our state. As an UPTE Member for Palestine, I am committed to heed the Palestinian trade unions calls for support by international labor.

  • Lea is one of UPTE’s most committed and effective leaders. As UCSD Co-Chair, Executive Board Representative, and Bargaining Team member, she has helped to build a strong leadership team at UCSD and among her Rehab colleagues across the state. She will be able to effectively represent UPTE’s interests and priorities at the CWA convention and help build solidarity across our international union.

  • My position as a Research Associate at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is both my first job out of college and my first job with the opportunity to be part of a union. Though I haven’t been here very long, I am now a Unit Representative serving multiple buildings, working with other researchers who feel similarly to how I did when I started out: unfamiliar with how unions work and anxious about getting more involved. In these particularly restless times, especially as UPTE is in the midst of contract bargaining, I believe it’s all the more important to have conversations about community and solidarity with one another. If elected to serve as an UPTE delegate to the 2025 CWA Convention, I would be honored to work alongside my CWA siblings to be a better representative for my colleagues and to progress our collective mission for workers’ rights across the country.

  • I am a Spanish Medical Interpreter, a Chilean-American & member of UPTE Members for Palestine committed to union democracy, free speech and ending apartheid and the genocide against the Palestinian people. As CWA members: healthcare and education workers, IT workers, and journalists, we have a special responsibility to speak up. Our taxes, pensions, and AFLCIO cooperation w/ the apartheid Israel makes us complicit in this ongoing genocide. We need a united front of workers, students and communities to confront the onslaught of an administration that is violating the constitution and dismantling regulatory, funding and safety nets for the most vulnerable while sending billions to prop up apartheid in Israel and to kill our colleagues in Gaza.

I urge our members to also vote for my two other colleagues from UPTE Members for Palestine, Anita Neuchterlin and Gian Smith for both the CWA and UPTE conventions. It is not only about a contract fight. We need to join the emerging labor movement to fight for Single Payer health care and against mass deportation at home and ethnic cleansing and genocide in Palestine. We are all connected. • Occupation: Social Worker at UCSF Citywide Case Management.

Statement: I believe in bottom-up organizing—everyone’s voices in our union deserve to be heard and reflected in our working priorities. I’m a member of Citywide’s Mutual Aid Committee, which helped raise over $10,000, lessening the financial impact of income lost for striking social workers. I am actively working with UPTE’s Director of Government Affairs and San Francisco’s District Supervisors to advocate for the end of UCSF’s two-tiered, unequal pay system between Health and Campus social workers. Through these organizing and advocacy efforts, I have deepened my understanding and commitment to our union. I hope to continue working alongside all of you to amplify our voices and unite our movement.

  • Hello, my name is Isabel Velasquez and I'm a Clinical Social Worker in the SM ED at UCLA. I've worked at UCLA for 3 years and I'm running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I've worked as a unit representative to build our union’s power in preparation for this contract campaign. I do this because I want to be a voice for you all so that UC knows that we are not afraid to stand up for what we deserve. We deserve the best level of care just like our patients.

Please vote for the entire Organize for Power slate to be the UCLA delegates at the 2025 convention. We represent leaders who have been actively engaged in mobilizing workers during this historic contract fight. Because of our work, UPTE has recruited more leaders and had the strongest turnout we have ever had in our history, not only at UCLA but across all UCs.

We work in healthcare, research and technical job titles and are all committed to winning a transformative contract so we can continue to advocate for our patients, research and students.

Help us continue to build our power to create a UC to be proud of, vote Organize for Power!

  • Hello, my name is Ingrid Munoz and I am a Social Work Associate at Venice Family Clinic department of UCLA. I have worked at UCLA for 21 years and I am running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I have worked as a workplace representative to build our union’s power in preparation for this contract campaign. I do this because I believe every worker deserves a strong voice in decisions that affect our jobs, our patients, and our communities. I’m motivated by the incredible strength and solidarity I’ve seen among my coworkers, and I want to continue building that power to win the fair contract we deserve.

  • Hello, my name is River and I am a Senior Clinical Research Coordinator in the Hematology/Oncology Department at UCLA. I have worked at UCLA for 4 years and I am running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I have worked as a workplace and unit representative for the last two years to build our union’s power in preparation for this contract campaign. I do this because as a clinical researcher I know the sacrifices we make when staffing is low, the benefits aren’t cutting it but we keep moving because we are passionate about our patients. UCLA CRCs weren’t in UPTE until 2023; many of us were uncertain after years of working without a say in our quality of life. Two years later, CRC participation here has flourished and we now have the opportunity to let our voices be heard.

  • Hello, my name is Rose Nieves Dominguez and I have been a Social worker associate at Venice Family Clinic for 9 years. I provide substance abuse counseling in the Summit department and I love my job because I'm passionate about helping restore patients' lives from substance use addictions.

I am also dedicated to keeping our staff members supported & engaged with this challenging work. That is why I have been a workplace representative for over 4 years, helping to build our union’s power in preparation for this contract campaign.

We all deserve fair wages, good contracts, and to be able to keep up with the cost of living right now. I am proud to be part of a team that is dedicated to fighting for better work conditions and ensuring our patients continue to get the care they deserve.

Please vote for all the leaders like me who are part of the Organize for Power slate. We represent workers who have been actively engaged in mobilizing our colleagues during this historic contract fight. Because of our work, UPTE has recruited more leaders and had the strongest turnout we have ever had in our history.

    Thank you for your consideration.

Afford travel and lodging so we can attend!

Please vote for everyone in the UPWARD slate so we can make sure that YOU are a part of planning our union’s future!

  • Hello, My name is Wandisa Landry and I am a RN Clinical Case Manager for the UCLA Santa Monica Department of Care Coordination and Clinical Social Work. I have worked for UCLA for over 11 years, and I am running to represent UCLA at our upcoming UPTE Convention. For the past several years I have worked as a workplace representative to build our union's power so that my coworkers and colleagues from the various departments and disciplines can have a voice in their contract development. This contract year is more important than ever as there are several areas our members want to see improved to meet their needs as employees dedicated to providing the highest quality of care that our patients deserve. I do this because I believe we can have better working conditions to keep us doing what we all feel passionate about. A contract the provides for career growth, fair pay and affordable healthcare coverage, WorkLife balance and the various other platform items is what we need to strive for in this new contract. Please vote for the entire Organize for Power slate to be the UCLA delegates at the 2025 UPTE Convention, as this has been the group diligently taking up the charge to fight for our members. Thank You for your continued support.

  • My name is Chevelle Sleaford, and I’m a Clinical Research Coordinator in the Hematology/Oncology Department at UCLA, where I’ve proudly worked for the past four years. I’m running to represent UCLA at the 2025 UPTE convention because I believe in the power of collective action to create real change.

As a dedicated workplace representative, I’ve helped build our union’s strength in preparation for this pivotal contract campaign. I do this work because I believe frontline workers deserve increased pay, better benefits, and safe staffing levels. While UC executives prioritize profits and bonuses, we are the ones who keep research moving, patients cared for, and students supported. It’s time our value is recognized.

I’m running with the Organize for Power slate, leaders who have been on the ground mobilizing members in one of the most powerful contract fights in our union’s history. Because of our organizing, UPTE has seen record-breaking engagement across all UCs.

We represent healthcare, research, and technical workers who are committed to winning a transformative contract that uplifts us all. Stand with us in building a stronger union and a UC we can be proud of.

Vote for Organize for Power—let’s win this together!

  • Hello, my name is Julie Zamarripa and I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the Microbiology Lab at UCLA. I have worked at UCLA for 15 years and I am running with the Organize for Power slate to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

  • Hello, my name is Alison Vogelsang and I am a occupational therapist in the Rehabilitation Department at UCLA. I have worked at UCLA for 5 years and I am running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I have worked as a Unit representative to build our union’s power in preparation for this contract campaign. I do this because I believe our union is fighting to improve our professions. I believe we are working hard for our work life balance.

  • Please vote the entire UCLA Organize for Power team as UC Los Angeles chapter delegates to the 2025 UPTE Convention! You have our commitment to continue to advocate for bold, member-driven union campaigns that unite our colleagues across all UCs and job classifications. We have a proven track record of mobilizing our colleagues, calling upon our community partners, and making our collective voices heard during our historic strikes this past year. We know that, with your help, we can secure a transformative contract that Resets UC’s Priorities and invests in UC's most valuable resource – its workers!

  • My name is Juliana Carranza and I’m a social worker and therapist at UCLA’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). I’ve worked at UCLA for almost four years and am also a proud UCLA alumna. I’m running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I’ve worked actively as a workplace representative for the last year to build UPTE’s power in preparation for this contract campaign. I do this because I care deeply about the work that we do at CAPS. I’m fighting to get a contract that makes this work more sustainable, so we can retain excellent workers (like you!) and provide the best care possible to our students.

Please vote for the entire Organize for Power slate. We represent leaders who’ve been diligently mobilizing workers during this historic contract fight. Because of our work, UPTE has recruited more leaders and had the strongest turnout we’ve ever had in our history.

We work in healthcare, research and technical job titles and are all committed to winning a transformative contract so we can continue to advocate for our patients, research and students.

Help us continue to build our power to create a UC to be proud of. Vote Organize for Power!

  • Hello, my name is Kim Vo and I am an outpatient pharmacist at UCLA in Westwood and in Santa Monica. I have worked at UCLA for 3 years and I am running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I have worked as a workplace representative to build our union’s power in preparation for this contract campaign. I do this because it’s easy to feel unheard in the workplace especially as everyone is overwhelmed and overworked, but I can’t stand to see UC do me, my coworkers and all of us as UC workers wrong. UC has the resources to give us the compensation and staffing support, among other things, to allow us to do our jobs at a high level without this level of backlog and stress. I know, and want to help other UC workers realize that our union can get our voices heard and move the needle through collective action.

Please vote for the entire Organize for Power slate to be the UCLA delegates at the 2025 convention. We represent leaders who have been actively engaged in mobilizing workers during this historic contract fight. • My name is Michael Terzano, and I am a Museum Scientist at the Hammer Museum at UCLA. I have worked at UCLA for almost ten years, and I am running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I have had many roles during my time with UPTE including working as a bargainer during our last contract, as member of our local board and most recently as a workplace representative. I do this work because I think that the people we work with deserve a strong voice and that through collective power, we can make all our lives better. I saw that in the last contract negotiations, and I see this happening now in this contract fight.

Having strong leadership now is imperative to winning what we deserve and that is why I am happy to be a part of the Organize for Power slate at UCLA. We are made up of leaders who have really pushed UPTE forward, and I am so happy to be working with them to bring us all the best contract we have had.

Please vote to send us all to the UPTE convention so that your voices are centered in this fight for a better Union.

I’m running to represent you at this fall’s convention because I believe there’s more our Union should be doing to help you and include you. • Hello, my name is Justin Brake and I am a Clinical Research Coordinator at the OBGYN Oncology team at UCLA. I have worked at UCLA since July of 2024 and I am running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I am working as a unit representative to build our union’s power in preparation for this contract campaign. I do this because UC undervalues the work of our represented workers and often sees us as cogs in a machine. UC needs to be held honest about what we do for the university and the people it serves. Through UPTE we can hold UC accountable and have them invest in our work properly rather than seeing our labor as just a cost.

  • I am Alexis Alvarado and I am a Clinical Research Coordinator in Hematology/Oncology at UCLA. I have worked at UCLA for almost 2 years and I am running to represent UCLA as a delegate at our 2025 convention.

Getting involved with UPTE began the moment I observed my coworkers working tirelessly for their patients in the exploitative conditions expected by this institution. I sought out UPTE for the resources to pursue the work-life that my coworkers deserved, and I transitioned to becoming a unit representative. Now, I fight even harder for a revolutionary contract for all clinical research coordinators at UCLA. UPTE represented workers are amongst the driving force behind UCLA Health being a #1 patient care health system. Our patients deserve to have healthcare teams that are fully staffed and resourced at every step of their care, and that is why I fight.

I am running on the Organize for Power slate, which represents leaders who have been consistently mobilizing workers during this groundbreaking contract fight. Because of our work, UPTE has had historic levels of recruitment and turnout, not only at UCLA but across all UCs. Let’s continue to advocate for our patients, research, and students together.

  • Hello, my name is Max and I'm an IT worker at the UCLA School of Law. I have worked at UCLA for 13 years and I'm running to represent UCLA at our upcoming convention.

I have served as a unit representative and chapter co-chair to build our union’s power in preparation for this contract campaign. I do this because I wholeheartedly believe the fight for higher education and workplace justice are inextricably connected. I organize with UPTE out of love for my coworkers and the mission of higher education.

  • Hello, my name is Ursula Quinn, I've been an occupational therapist in NPH at UCLA for over 20 years and UPTE vice president since 2021. I've worked as a Unit representative to build our union’s power in preparation for our contract campaign. We now have 200 worker leaders at UCLA and are still growing. I'm committed to this work because I want UC to be a place where workers are supported, proud of the services we provide and able to provide for ourselves and our families with dignity.

  • I've been working for 6 years as a licensed mental health counselor for students at UC Davis. I serve as a unit rep for the UC Davis campus HX workers. I’ve worked to build interest and participation in UPTE among my coworkers, and I’ve helped add new members to our union. Particular issues that have driven me to be active in our union include work/life balance, stopping UC from outsourcing or "union busting" our jobs, and making sure we get the contract we need and deserve- which in turn helps us best serve our students and patients.

Please vote the entire UCD Organize for Power team as delegates to the 2025 UPTE Convention, so that we can continue to advocate for bold, member-driven union campaigns that unite our colleagues across all UCs and job classifications. If we continue to successfully mobilize our colleagues, call upon our community partners, and make our collective voices heard we can secure a transformative contract that Reset's UC's Priorities and invests in UC's most valuable resource - us!

  • My name is Gemma Blumenshine and I have been a member of UPTE for 2.5 years now. I got more into the union and the important work that we do as I got more information about the UC system and how they constantly neglect worker needs. I work at the VMTH in Davis and I am proud to stand with my coworkers and fellow UPTE members and do what is right. I am excited to be a Candidate this year and can’t wait to see what we accomplish next!

We have been organizing our workplaces at UCSD, participating in bargaining sessions, and turning out members to the picket line in huge numbers for the past year. • Organized labor is entering an era of increasing challenges after a period of record inflation. Wages across the USA have lagged behind for decades. I am a mid-career technician willing to place myself in the crosshairs to ask hard questions for myself and my fellow workers. I request that my peers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography send me to the UPTE convention to build the knowledge and relationships needed for effective negotiations and teach what I’ve learned to the rest of us.

UC Berkeley/UC Office of the President Chapter

  • Museum Scientist at UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley.

I joined UPTE because I recognize the value of collective efforts and believe in the power of workers to shape the workplace for everyone's benefit. I'm so proud to be a part of the union and grateful for everything I have learned over the last three years. The connections I have built with other members have buoyed me in advocating alongside my coworkers for pay equity in our workplace and to codify the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the Garden's stated values. With the help of the union, we have tackled problems together that seem intractable alone. I see that UPTE has a special culture of care, listening, and participation that is helping us construct the world we want to live in.

The Organize for Power UPTE Convention team is made up of Unit and Workplace reps who have spent the last year mobilizing their co-workers to strike in different titles and departments across our campus. We want to help represent our diverse workplaces at UPTE convention, to learn from other campuses and share the successes we’ve had here, and come back motivated and energized to finish the contract fight.

  • I am a Lab Mechanician here at Berkeley. I have been a Unit Rep on campus for nearly three years and have been serving on the Bargaining Team for the past year. Meeting with members, both on our campus and across the state, I have learned first hand about our common concerns and struggles. Vote for me and my Organize for Power colleagues so we can continue to build our strength for a better contract.

  • I have worked at UC Berkeley as a Business Technology Support Analyst since 2012 and have been an active UPTE member since 2013. I have served as UPTE President for 4 years and am Chief Negotiator for bargaining with UC. Under my leadership, UPTE membership statewide has increased by more than 50%, from less than 9,000 to nearly 15,000.

  • I am eager to represent the voices of those who support our research, healthcare, and technical fields. Together we stand to save lives and power progress, while advocating for the respect our work deserves. With 20,000 strong, each member has the opportunity to be heard and valued - not just by words, but through action and solidarity.

  • I would be honored to represent my coworkers at this year's UPTE convention. I take the responsibility of voting on motions & changes to our bylaws very seriously and will always act independently as I see the best interests of my co-workers. I see incredible power in our Union and have been honored to be a part of the phenomenal growth that we have seen and I look forward to a contract victory based on that renewed UPTE power. I see the potential for many local victories using the momentum we have built on the picket line and I will vote at the convention to continue to empower UPTE members to affect their work.

  • I am a museum scientist and have been working at Berkeley since December 2023. I began as a workplace rep, but since the Feb strikes felt so moved by the sense of community on the picket line that I wanted to get more involved. I did not expect to meet so many colleagues that I would have otherwise remained isolated from just by working the strike sign-in table. The solidarity I felt on the picket line alleviated a lot of the frustration I had been feeling about UC. I wanted to help out more, so I became a co-unit rep for the Museums, Gardens, Herbaria and Library unit with Leslie Freund. Outside of helping at strikes and unit rep meetings, I organize departmental meetings, do walkarounds to talk to members one-on-one, and host lunch workplace “show and tells” with fellow UPTE members.

I have felt very grateful for UPTE giving me a greater sense of purpose while working at Berkeley and more confidence to set boundaries in my workplace. I hope that attending the convention will allow me to learn how to better mobilize UPTE members and speak up for others and myself at work.

  • I am the unit rep for Research Professionals (RX) and the UCSB Bargainer for our next contract with UC. Together with the other representatives we have helped grow membership and activity at UCSB. With the previous strikes we have shown that UCSB is fighting for the change we need to see from the UC. We are sick and tired of being overworked, underpaid, and critically understaffed.

  • My name is Michael Benaron, and I’m a Physician Assistant at UCSB Student Health. I’m proud to be running as a delegate for the upcoming UPTE convention. For the past three years, I’ve served as an active organizer with UPTE, working side by side with my colleagues to build power, advocate for fair treatment, and ensure that healthcare workers across UCSB are heard and respected.

As a frontline provider, I understand the challenges we face everyday—short staffing, burnout, stagnant wages, and the fight for professional respect. I believe that when we stand together, we can achieve real improvements in our working conditions, wages, and workplace safety. I’m committed to representing all UCSB clinical healthcare workers and to fighting for the dignity and recognition we all deserve.

Attending the convention is a vital opportunity to help shape our union’s direction, policies, and campaigns. If elected, I will bring our local voices to the statewide table, advocate for strong contracts, and support efforts to organize and empower every UPTE member.

Thank you for your consideration. I would be honored to represent you at the convention and continue standing up for what we all deserve. Solidarity!

  • Vote for proven experience and ability. I have been an UPTE member for several years and have served UPTE in multiple positions such as stepping up to be the local UPTE Santa Barbara President during the difficult early years of covid when the campus was shut down and most recently as bargainer for the System Administrator accretion which saw major victories for IT at UCSB, protecting jobs and winning up to 24.5% in back raises that were previously denied for years by UCOP. I helped rebuild UPTE at UCSB, turning falling membership into growing membership and laying the groundwork for better communications and outreach. Its through hard work, compromise, and sacrifice that UPTE at UCSB is now rebuilt enough to actually have elections for the UPTE convention as we have more candidates than delegate slots. I am glad to have this election as it means all the hard work over the last few years is working, and that there is enough support structures and job security for others to feel confident enough to put their name in. Lets keep up the good work now that we are fighting for a new contract, for when we fight, we win.

  • Among other things, UPTE is a tech union. As such, we have a duty of care to the university community when it comes to harms imposed upon it by management via technical systems. These systems are often put in place quietly without the consent of those most impacted. As tech workers, this behooves us to pay attention to such actions and to speak out for and work with the rest of the university community to resist these impositions.

I want to make sure that UPTE takes the time to assess and speak out about this. UCOP's policies currently ignore the voices and safety of staff, faculty and students when it comes to its obsession with promoting "AI" and glad handing with large tech conglomerates such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon, all of whom are compromised by the current Federal régime. We need to demand a say in how computing tech is implemented on our campuses.

  • I have heard it said that no on needs to be a hero as long as we all have a little courage. I believe that is true. I also believe that persistence, when paired with this courage and the numbers we are when we band together, is the path to our goal. It is hard to say no to the person forever reminding public leaders of their duties to fairness, and harder still when that person is back by legions.

  • I have been an active member of UPTE for the past five years, participating as a HX unit rep, a current member of the UPTE executive board, and a member of both the Behavioral Health Counselor (BHC) bargaining team and systemwide bargaining team representing the Health Center Campuses. When we fight together, we win together!

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Chapter

  • My name is Kwadwo Kumi-Amankwah and I am a mechanical engineering machinist at Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory. My work at LBNL is the first unionized job I’ve ever had. I joined UPTE as a
member in April 2024 and started actively being involved in January 2025. So union organizing is very
new to me. But it’s been quite the experience in this short period of time.
I am the first workplace representative of my building. It’s nice to be a consistent presence for
UPTE in my facility. It’s put me through some unique and challenging experiences that I’ve never quite
felt before. Starting off right in contract negotiation season has also provided extra challenges but has
also inspired me. I’m always very impressed to see UPTE’s size and strength when we really mobilize. I
wish to represent LBNL at this year’s convention for the opportunity to learn more general organizing
skills, network with people, and be more involved in the greater labor movement as a whole.

I have represented Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s workers as a delegate for the past three conventions. If democratically elected, I look forward to doing it again on behalf of Chapter 184 rank and file. Solidarity forever.

  • My name is Chelsea Hernandez and I am a Senior Research Associate at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. I took on the role of Unit Representative for my building and also participated as a picket-line marshal and chant leader during the strikes this year. I had the honor of representing the workers of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a delegate at the 2024 UPTE Convention, and I’m excited for the chance to do it again this year if elected. Thank you!

  • I have worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2019, as Lead Photographer and Video Producer (798.4), and an active UPTE member during my time at the Lab.. I am currently a Unit Representative for RX and TX in Buildings 50, 70, 70A, 30, and 33, and have served on the State-wide Executive Board, representing LBNL, since 2023. I have been an active union member in CWA my entire professional career, and am proud to have the opportunity to continue working behind the scenes to fight for economic justice and the rights of all workers.

  • I am seeking your vote to represent Mt. San Jacinto College at the 2025 UPTE-CWA Convention because I am deeply committed to advocating for adjunct faculty and securing meaningful gains through collective action.

Over the past two years as a member of our bargaining team, I have helped deliver real results for our members—including a salary increase, a 10% one-time benefit payment, and additional compensation for professional training. These wins reflect my dedication and ability to negotiate effectively on behalf of our adjunct community.

Looking ahead, I plan to expand my knowledge of the bargaining process and develop targeted proposals to increase pay equity, improve working conditions, and secure greater professional recognition for adjuncts. Attending the 2025 UPTE-CWA Convention will equip me with new tools, training, and strategic insight to strengthen our position in the next bargaining cycle.

Additionally, I aim to build a network of allies across campuses—people who can offer advice, share best practices, and help us bring stronger proposals to the table.

By electing me as your delegate, you’re supporting an advocate who will continue to fight for fair compensation, respect, and opportunity for all adjunct faculty.
    Thank you for your support.

  • Hello Esteemed Colleagues,

I am an adjunct history instructor at MSJC for eleven years now. I have been on the bargaining team for the last three years and have consistently attended the weekly meetings to further the goals of the part-time faculty union. Even though I am incredibly busy working at three districts, attending college classes of my own, and volunteering at three organizations, I make the time in my busy schedule to stand up and fight for equitable treatment of part-time faculty. Through this experience I have historical insight working with the district, understanding their tactics to unfairly compensate and treat adjuncts with disrespect. I am passionate about righting the egregious disrespect part-time faculty endure at this district.

While we didn’t achieve all the goals that I closely participated in creating along with the other bargaining team members in the last contractual bargaining cycle, we made a dent and I want to continue to build on those achievements. Thus, attending the UPTE conference furthers my knowledge and insight into union work, and have found the last three conventions a useful learning experience that I can take back into the union work regarding MSJC.

    Thank you so much,
    Laura Sweeney
